Studebakers Set To Invade Lancaster, Pennsylvania
Lancaster, PA. Wow! Did I just see a Studebaker? That might be your response during the week of September 14 to September 20, 2008 as the Studebaker Drivers Club (SDC), a club with over 12,000 members brings its 44th Annual International Meet to the Lancaster Host Resort and Conference Center, Lincoln Way East, East Lampeter Township. This annual gathering will bring members from over 45 states and up to 9 foreign countries.
Each year the SDC holds its annual meet in different areas of the US. This year’s event marks a return to Pennsylvania for the first time in 28 years. In 1980 the event was held in Gettysburg very near the Homestead of John Clement Studebaker, father of the five sons who founded the company in 1852 as H & C Studebaker Wagon Company. As in 1980, this event is being hosted by the Keystone Region Chapter of the SDC, the largest chapter within the SDC with almost 400 members.
Throughout the week be prepared to see up to as many as 1,000 Studebaker vehicles on the roads in the area near the Host Resort as the members of the SDC and their guests participate in numerous events and tours scheduled for the participants. Events begin on Monday with the rededication of the Studebaker Monument located on the John C. Studebaker Homestead in Tyrone Township, Adams County and culminate on Friday with the annual Awards Banquet.
Thursday is the feature day with the annual Concours Show scheduled to begin at 9:00 AM on the Host Resort’s grounds. This event is expected to feature up to 800 Studebakers on the field and will be the largest all Studebaker event ever held. Vehicles on the field will range from early wagons and buggies to 1966 models, the last year of Studebaker production. Don’t be surprised if you see vehicles representing Studebaker’s military production and some of its heavy-duty trucks. This event is open to the public at no charge.
Noted Independent Automobile authority Patrick Foster will also be in attendance at the Meet. Mr. Foster just recently completed his first major work on the Studebaker Corporation and its vehicles. He will be available to speak with the public, SDC members and to sign copies of his recent book “Studebaker, The Complete Story.”
Joining the SDC in this event are sister clubs, the Avanti Owners Association International and the Antique Studebaker Club. These clubs will feature the Studebaker Avanti along with Second Generation Avantis, originally designed by famed Industrial Designer Raymond Loewy, and Studebaker automobiles built prior to 1941.
